Overview:

The Grid-Interactive Controls (GIC) Group in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division (EEID) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking an Urban-Scale Building Energy Modeling Post-Doctoral researcher. The group provides support to U.S. residential and commercial buildings to improve energy efficiency and modernize the electric grid. The work in this group focuses on creating and simulating buildings at city- to nation-scales using big data processing, artificial intelligence, and high performance computing applied in the context of building energy modeling. This work is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, under the Building Technologies Office within the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Major Duties/
Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for conducting, coordinating, and reporting complex research assignments related to buildings, specifically:
    • urban-scale building energy modeling
    • assessing grid-interactive efficient building (GEB) technologies
    • perform big data processing for intuitive presentation of complex results
  • Interacting and collaborating with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry

Basic
Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in a scientific discipline with an Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science degree preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Have the background, education, and experience to provide support to research for urban-scale energy modeling

Preferred
Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of high performance computing (HPC), machine learning techniques, design of experiments (DOE), generation of models with OpenStudio, simulation of models with EnergyPlus, and analysis of simulation output.
  • strong proficiencies with Linux environments, modeling and simulation environments, data analysis, machine learning, and sensors and control systems
  • Experience with database management systems, web services, software and interface design, climate change data, and heating, ventil
  • ion, and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipmentExcellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
