Purpose:

The Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division s Advanced Reactor Engineering and Development Section at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a Senior R&D Staff Member- Reactor and Nuclear System Security Engineer. This role provides scientific leadership to strategically advance in the security design and analysis of reactors and other nuclear systems, including construction, deployment and operation of innovative nuclear power plants. Our Senior R&D Staff are scientific leaders in and beyond the ORNL community and help to define the future of their respective areas of expertise. This position works closely with the R&D line leadership to define and implement the scientific vision; establish capabilities that enable programs to excel at the forefront of science and technology; perform R&D to advance the field of knowledge and/or technology in one s respective specialty; set, implement, and model standards for performance of work consistent with Environment, Safety, Security, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements and business rules; and ensure a diverse and inclusive work environment where every employee feels safe, heard, and appreciated a workplace that sets an example for the broader community.

The incumbent will work with and lead scientists and engineers at DOE and other DOE laboratories, NRC, and industrial partners in research and development toward developing analytical methods for incorporating, and practical approaches to implementing, security by design principles which will lead to the deployment of nuclear reactors and other nuclear facilities. This includes research topic areas such as physical protection systems including access controls; intrusion detection; blast mitigation; emerging threats, such as cybersecurity and unmanned aerial systems; delay designs with advanced materials; risk and vulnerability analyses; insider mitigation; and site security designs. This position will be expected to work with a cross-cutting team on ambitious deployment innovation efforts, including projects in advanced manufacturing, safety, security, licensing and regulatory issues, and economics. Additionally, this position will represent ORNL and US interests in interactions in both domestic and international settings.

Major Duties and
Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a Principal Investigator, pursuing innovative ideas to reduce the barriers to the deployment of innovative nuclear energy technologies
  • Initiate, plan and execute high impact R&D programs and projects, working with project sponsors, research staff, operations staff, and external collaborators
  • Lead interactions with existing and potential sponsors to develop new programs and pursue funding opportunities
  • Mentor early career staff to establish a cohesive, functional group and expand the overall capability of ORNL to engage in nuclear power design and construction programs
  • Exemplify a commitment to excellence in research, operations, and community engagement, and work cooperatively to leverage scientific capabilities across ORNL
  • Advance the reputation of the group and standing of the group as a whole through establishment of collaborations, professional society leadership and involvement, and organization of technical events

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Ph.D. with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience, M.S. with a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience, or BS with more than 15 years relevant experience.
  • Professional experience in the design, construction, and/or operation of a nuclear power plant or nuclear fuel cycle facility, with a focus on the security and safeguards aspects
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the US Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program

Preferred
Qualifications:

  • Experience leading nuclear power or nuclear fuel cycle security projects in a regulated environment, foreign and/or domestic, with a strong commitment to safety, quality assurance, and data security.
  • Demonstrated ability to make significant technical contributions to projects while also interfacing with collaborators and contributors from multiple peer organizations and scientific capability areas.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated leadership ability and a strong commitment to a diverse and collaborative team environment.
  • Experience working for or collaborating with DOE National Laboratories (or similar R&D organizations), international research institutions, the International Atomic Energy Agency, foreign governments, universities and/or nuclear industry vendors and utilities.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
